Negotiation Skills

Nepal - A one-day training program on Negotiation Skills was held at FNCCI by WINNER Nepal in coordination with Women Entrepreneurship Development Committee of FNCCI. The main resource persons for the program were Mr. Sanu Raja Shilpakar, Senior Trainer with the Lalitpur Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Rajan Dhaubhadel, Program Officer with Bhaktapur Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Dharma Shakya, Vice-President of Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal. The topics covered were Principles, Theories and Methods of Negotiation. Mr. Shilpakar and Mr. Dharma Shakya also related their experiences dealing with the Trade Unions of certain political parties when disruptions at workplaces and threats to businessmen were common. Both had been victims of such notorious intimidation tactics and believed proper negotiations could have resulted in less unfortunate consequences.

The program was divided into three parts and each of the resource persons took charge of a session. A total of twenty-four small and medium-scale women entrepreneurs took part in the program. The entrepreneurs reported in the feedback that they had found the program immensely useful considering extortion and political trade unions are still very active. A practical game was played at the end of the day with the women entrepreneurs divided into two groups, one representing business owners and the other representing trade unions. The role playing was considered by the participants as both eye-opening and exhilarating. Handbooks on the rights and obligation of labor and of proprietors were also distributed by FNCCI to the participants.
