China, specifically the City of Ordos (Inner Mongolia Region), expressed commitment to support the initiative in order to put to action gender equality in the pursuit of development and peace in the context of the MDGs.</p> <p>Together with relevant authorities of China, in particular the Ordos Women Federation, DEVNET has done preparatory activities, including the sending of a technical mission to Ordos City to confer with local authorities and project collaborators on the possibility of identifying suitable site for the physical infrastructure that would house the project. </p> <p>With deep historical roots and rich natural resources, Ordos is fast rising as modern city in the 21st century. The project stakeholders consider locating the hub of the project in one of the areas in the city. </p> <p>The project is dubbed as WINNER Women Leaders University, in the framework of the WINNER project that has developed transformative leaders among women from the developing regions of the world.  </p> <p>Todate, WINNER has benefited over 40,000 women from small and medium enterprises with training courses on information and communication technology, enterprise development and access to new markets.</p> <p>The planning and realization of the concept of a WINNER Women Leaders University is a timely response to the call raised by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during his address at the Summing-up Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals, where he stressed that education is the fulcrum of change in the 21st century.</p> <p>According with Mr. Milano, WINNER Regional Director for Asia, who conducted the mission to Ordos City , the WINNER Women Leaders University project aims to provide integrated leadership training courses along the themes of the MDGs.</p> <p>The thrust of the training is leadership role of women, by fully exploiting their capacities and talents and to sharpen these to meet political, economic,  environmental and development challenges of today and the future. The university aims to have state-of-the-art educational facilities and learning laboratories, modern amenities and life enhancing ambiance. Five large glass columns guard the entrance to the DEVNET pavilion. And they are not just any columns. No, they contain a special meaning. The four outer columns are filled with water. Neither this is just any kind of water. It is water from the Yellow River, from the Yangtze River, from Beijing's Tiananmen Square and from Canadian sources.</p> <p>Water is one of the four fundamental elements of human's existence, it is necessary for our survival. If water did not exist, we would not exist either. It is too much of an important relation to leave it in the background. The choice of water-filled columns symbolizes that water is a pillar of our society, it is there to support us.</p> <p>The Yellow River and the Yangtze River are vital for China's economy and agriculture. Their waters have been irrigating and fertilizing the surrounding area for thousands of years, and it is in these areas that Chinese Civilization and Nation were born. The support that the capital, and all the Nation, gives to the people of Shanghai and to the World Expo is represented by the column filled with water from Tiananmen Square. Although the last column does not contain national water, is reason can still be found withing the borders. It comes from water sources in Canada, country of origin of Dr. Norman Bethune: a doctor who served under the 'Chinese Communists' – led by Mao Zedong – during the second Sino-Japanese war. He died at the front, in 1939, ´fighting´for the Chinese Cause. This column represents the gratitude that Chinese people have towards Dr. Bethune, and towards all Canadian people.</p> <p>the last column, the middle one, is atypical. It's the only one out of the five that does not contain water. It contains soil from the highlands of Yungui, a region in south-west China that has been stricken with a heavy drought. This has caused the economic development to slow down and has had a huge impact on the availability of drinkable water. This column wants to be an invitation of reflection. It wants to awaken the conscience of human beings and remind them to protect and preserve our precious resources. Tourists can make a donation that will be used to send drinkable water to the drought-stricken area of the highlands.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Images:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="http://www.devnetinternational.org/sites/default/files/news-columnas-1.jpg" title="Water, the richness of our planet " class="colorbox" rel="gallery-26"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.devnetinternational.org/sites/default/files/news-columnas-1.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="http://www.devnetinternational.org/sites/default/files/news-columnas-2.jpg" title="Water, the richness of our planet " class="colorbox" rel="gallery-26"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.devnetinternational.org/sites/default/files/news-columnas-2.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/expo-2010" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">EXPO 2010</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/shanghai" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">SHANGHAI</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/china" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">CHINA</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-thumb-image field-type-image field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Thumbnail:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://www.devnetinternational.org/sites/default/files/news-columnas-1_0.jpg" alt="" /></div></div></div> Tue, 18 May 2010 04:00:00 +0000 devnet 26 at http://www.devnetinternational.org http://www.devnetinternational.org/content/water-richness-our-planet#comments Opening ceremony of the DEVNET Pavilion http://www.devnetinternational.org/content/opening-ceremony-devnet-pavilion <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Content:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Dear Ladies and Gentleman</p> <p>I may say that today is one of those days that DEVNET has been preparing for a quarter of a century, since 1985 when China became one of the nine first founding members of our international information network.</p> <p>During these 25 years, DEVNET always tried to do its best to support and communicate to the rest of the world the opening and reform process that China, under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, its government and its Communist Party was starting to carry on.</p> <p>Above all, for DEVNET, for its people who run DEVNET bureaux in 4 continents, for the hundred of thousands of beneficiaries of our information for development projects and programmes, and mainly for DEVNET China which, thanks to its efforts and capacities make this possible, our Pavilion wants to symbolize the strength of DEVNET’s friendship with the People’s Republic of China, with its central and local governments, its cities, with which we feel proud to work and cooperate with since our inception.</p> <p>As a further proof of the extremely significance that we give to our links with China and to our participation in the World Expo, there is the fact that Mr. Boutrus Boutrus Ghali, former Secretary General of the United Nations, accepted to be the Honorary Chairman of DEVNET Pavilion. </p> <p>And as Mr. Boutrus Boutrus Ghali states in his congratulatory letter: “The DEVNET Pavilion, of which I am honored to serve as Honorary Chairman, portrays initiatives related to human development, in the economic, environmental and social dimensions. It is a vivid demonstration of the theme of Shanghai World Expo "Better City, Better Life".</p> <p>One of the aims of the Shanghai EXPO is to promote cross-cultural dialogue. At a time when our world is becoming smaller on account of our increased connectivity, cross-cultural dialogue becomes essential to avoid conflict, promote world peace and build a safer and more compassionate world.</p> <p>China represents a dynamic, rapidly developing society, which comprises one sixth of humanity.</p> <p>China is experiencing the challenges of accelerated development and recognizes the need to conceptualize new ways to address them. If China can manage its economic development while containing its ecological footprint, it will have achieved something that everyone in the world can learn from.</p> <p>China is endowed with ancient wisdom and traditions that enrich its trajectory towards sustainability. The integration of these values into the developmental equation needs is already being actively explored. One of the core principles of traditional Chinese culture, as President Hu Jintao use to remark, is harmony between the government and the Chinese people, between humans and nature.</p> <p>Sustainable development can only be achieved, if the interests of all members of society today, and of those yet to be born, are respected.  Both social equity and inter-generational justice are essential, for civilization to survive in the long term.  Being respectful to the needs of past, present and future generations is key to the Confucian view which underlies China’s developmental and political thinking.</p> <p>It must be noted that Shanghai World Expo takes place 10 years after world leaders adopted the Millennium Development Goals and two years before the 20th celebration of the Earth Summit.</p> <p>According to the 2009 Millennium Development Goals Report :“Progress towards these goals is now threatened by sluggish — or even negative — economic growth, diminished resources, fewer trade opportunities for the developing countries and possible reductions in aid flows from donor nations.”</p> <p>The impressive economic reforms carried out in China over the past few decades have resulted in spectacular progress and dramatic reductions of the number of poor (around 400 million people got out of poverty in the past 25 years). The country is on track to achieve, or has already achieved, most targets under goals 1 to 4 and 6” the said document declares…</p> <p>The Shanghai World Expo represents a milestone in the construction of not only "Better Cities" but also a "Better World", a more equitable and sustainable world, that fulfills the aspirations of all people for a life with full dignity now and in the future.</p> <p>This “better world” that the humankind deserves will be impossible without the key role China is called and is prepared to play.</p> <p>DEVNET is ready with modesty, but with deep conviction, to facilitate and create the best conditions for the consolidation of cooperation between China and the rest of the world.</p> <p>We did it because we are convinced that none of the major issues confronting the world community today can be resolved without China. And China cannot achieve its own goals and aspirations except through engagement at the global level.</p> <div> </div> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image
