UNDP/UNOPS/DEVNET Initiation Plan for Sustainable Agro-production in Nicaragua

Nicaragua-China, July 2013 - Nicaragua has the largest amount of land for agricultural production in Central America. Its agricultural resources are estimated as 3.6 million hectares divided into areas for highly technical agriculture, permanent crops and pastures. Rural agriculture in Nicaragua constitutes a social and economic dimension that requires support for its consolidation and strengthening. In turn it could become an effective mechanism for sustainable rural development and the alleviation of poverty.

China is one of the largest global markets for agro industrial projects. Its imports of agricultural products have increased from 20 to more than 120 billion USD between 2001 and 2012.

A larger demand for high quality products that take into account health and environmental factors is expected with the raise in the standard of living of its large population China is one of the largest and most dynamic global markets for agro industrial projects.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in collaboration with Devnet International are presently developing an Initiation Plan with the objective of developing sustainable agro production in Nicaragua based on the expansion of the Chinese demand for sustainable agricultural products and the potential of Nicaragua.

The aim of the technical cooperation programme is to develop joint venture opportunities. China has the capacity and available technologies to support a long-term development of sustainable agro industry in Nicaragua including associated energy, manufacturing and infrastructural requirements. The technical cooperation initiative will have its foundations on the experience and know how that has been growing in Nicaragua with the help of multilateral and bilateral support, private sector and government towards the strengthening of sustainable agro industry, its productive chains and the access to export markets.

The week of 12 August within the framework of the UNDP/UNOPS/DEVNET Initiation Plan a first visit of Chinese entrepreneurs will take place. The purpose of this visit is to inform Chinese private sector on the investment climate offered by Nicaragua, and to jointly explore the potential for joint venture programs and promotion of agro/industries and associated aspects like energy, transportation, road infrastructure, manufacturing, exports and imports, and other industries as well.

Nicaragua posee la mayor cantidad de tierra apta para la agricultura en Centro América, con 3.6 millones de hectáreas divididas en tierras para cultivos agrícolas tecnificados, cultivos permanentes y pastizales. La agroindustria rural es una realidad económica y social en Nicaragua que necesita apoyo para su consolidación y fortalecimiento. A su vez, puede convertirse en un mecanismo efectivo que contribuya al desarrollo rural y en un medio eficaz para contribuir a disminuir los índices de pobreza y aumentar los niveles de calidad de vida de los pobladores rurales.

China es uno de los mayores mercados mundiales para productos agro-industriales. Sus importaciones de productos agroindustriales han aumentado de 20 mil millones a más de 120 mil millones de dólares anuales entre 2001 y el 2012.

Con el alza del nivel de vida de su enorme población, se espera una mayor demanda por productos de calidad generados con conciencia de la salud y el medio ambiente. China es hoy por hoy uno de los principales países importadores de alimentos y su mercado es considerado como el más dinámico y prometedor para productos agroindustriales.

El PNUD, UNOPS y Devnet International estamos en este momento implementando un Plan de Iniciación (PI) con el objetivo de desarrollar un Programa en el sector agroindustrial basado en la expansión de la demanda China de productos agrícolas sostenibles y el vasto potencial de Nicaragua. China tiene la capacidad de proveer las inversiones y tecnologías para un desarrollo a largo plazo de agricultura sostenible incluyendo la infraestructura de transporte y manufactura necesaria.

La propuesta del nuevo Programa partirá de la base de conocimiento y experiencia que ha venido generándose en Nicaragua con el apoyo del sistema multilateral y bilateral, el sector privado y el gobierno para el fortalecimiento de la agroindustria sostenible, su encadenamiento productivo y el acceso a los mercados de exportación.

En el marco del Plan de Inicio durante la semana del 12 de Agosto se realizará una primera misión que incorpora empresarios e inversionistas Chinos o que operan en China. El objetivo de su visita es familiarizarse con el clima de inversión que ofrece el país y explorar el potencial de coinversión y promoción de mercados agrícolas y áreas relacionadas como sector energético, maquinaria, manufactura e infraestructura.
