Italy, October 2013 - IPS and DEVNET International were invited to the third edition of the International Participants Meeting (IPM) for Expo Milano 2015 on October 3-4, at the Lingotto in Turin, Italy. Two days were dedicated to the Universal Expo theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” with representatives from over one hundred countries.

The final day of the IPM for Expo Milano 2015 opened with the signing of contracts of participation by nine countries and five civil society organizations, including IPS.

The signing countries were Benin, Colombia, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Lithuania, Mexico, San Marino, Uruguay and Vietnam bringing the total number of countries participating to more than 130. Giuseppe Sala of Expo Milan 2015 officiated at the ceremony.

IPS was among the 5 civil society organizations, operating around the world, together with Fair Trade,Lions, Save the Children and WWF which signed the agreement of participation. To date 10 civil society organisations have joined Expo Milano 2015. It is important to underline that DEVNET and IPS signed a MOU establishing partnership for EXPO Milano 2015. EXPO Milano 2015 represents a great opportunity to highlight key messages to an expected 20 million visitors and 1 billion people globally through a Cyber Expo platform.

Joining civil society organizations at the recent preparatory meeting of international participants in Expo Milano 2015, DEVNET International along with Inter Press Service received recognition for capacity to echo the voices and choices of women in micro, small and medium enterprises and opinions of marginalized sectors in African communities, respectively.

DEVNET joins other organizations sharing common vision and philosophy for humankind, in embracing the concept of Expo Milan 2015: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.

The Expo concept aims to inspire unique experiences and stimulate interest in and quest for knowledge, thereby enriching the human capital for future generations. Feeding the Planet, Energy for life is a carefully chosen universal theme for the Expo as it is clearly linked to the the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, deadline of which precisely falls in 2015.

Expo 2015 will be an extraordinary universal event displaying tradition, creativity and innovation in the business of food. It will bring together many themes that have already been handled by this event in the past, and set them out anew in light of new global possibilities whose common core is the idea that everyone on the planet should have access to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient.

Acting at different points along the entire food supply chain from farm to table, public institutions, private firms, charitable associations, non-government organizations as well as consumer and producer representatives all play a role in promoting the development of the world’s food-related economic and social systems.

Meanwhile, Devnet-Bangladesh Director Ms Dil Afroje was appointed by the Bureau of International Exposition as Expo 2015 Theme Ambassador in Bangladesh. The appointment was made in recognition of her accomplishments in advancing the women’s economic empowerment agenda in Bangladesh, particularly through the WINNER (Women Into the New Network for Entrepreneurial Reinforcement).
