Strengthening value chain through training, networking and participating in trade events

Bangladesh - Among the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh are invisible barriers such as paucity of information, lack of access to business networks and opportunities to build their capabilities to cater to overseas markets. To take a concrete step towards overcoming these difficulties, efforts have been made to step up training, enlarge business networks and strengthen the value chain.

One such step is participation in trade events for the purpose of introducing new products and meet new buyers as well as make a pitch for long-term business relationships with overseas buyers.

Recently, WINNER-Bangladesh organized a combined program of training, networking and direct selling activities for three days, coinciding with the celebration of Eid Mela, an important Muslim festival. The purpose of the program was to invite popular attention to women-run enterprises’ products and capacity to supply market demands as well as to focus on the business sustainability of the women’s enterprises in Bangladesh.

Held in Shubastu Nazar Valley at Gulshan, Dhaka, the program drew 132 women participants from different parts of the country. These women’s enterprises showcased their latest creations, designs and new products as well as exchanged ideas and business leads, thereby strengthening their business cooperation network in the country.

The products were exhibited at a special trade fair where spot selling and taking orders characterized the robust activities for the duration of three days. Estimated spot sales amounted to USD 20, 000 while orders were in larger value and volume.

According to WINNER-Bangladesh Director Dil Alfroze, the participation in the trade fair built the confidence of women in pursuing the growth of their businesses and inspired them to exchange ideas for future collaboration.

“WINNER-Bangladesh is a community of women in microenterprises. Since its inception, it has taken a leadership role in inspiring and encouraging women in Bangladesh to make a difference in their lines,” she said.

WINNER-Bangladesh has been assisting women entrepreneurs through various training programs such as those on the subjects of information and communication technology/Internet, product development, business development and best practices. It has also organized trade fairs and business missions to such countries as China, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, Bhutan, Nepal, Japan, Qatar, Dubai, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Italy, France and Germany.
